Another earthquake strikes off northern Japan

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck off the northern coast of Japan on August 1, according to the country's National Meteorological Agency.

The agency said the earthquake's epicentre was located in the Pacific Ocean east of Aomori Prefecture, with the hypocentre at a depth of 80 kilometres, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.

Authorities reported no immediate casualties or damage, and no tsunami warning was issued following the tremor.

The latest earthquake comes just days after a powerful magnitude 7.1 quake struck Japan's Kumamoto region on the southern island of Kyushu on July 28. The disaster, which registered the maximum level 7 on Japan's seismic intensity scale, has claimed 36 lives.

The earlier earthquake caused widespread destruction, including an explosion at AEON Mall Kumamoto, the collapse of a chimney at a paper factory, and damage to or destruction of more than 1,500 homes across the affected areas.
