Iran proposes hosting Caspian Sea summit Enhances bilateral ties with Turkmenistan
During his meeting with Turkmen counterpart Rashit Meredov, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian expressed Tehran's willingness to host the upcoming Caspian Sea littoral states summit.
The discussions, part of Amir-Abdollahian's visit to Turkmenistan, centered on bilateral relations as well as regional and global developments, Mehrnews reports.
Amir-Abdollahian emphasized the importance of expanding cooperation between Iran and Turkmenistan in the energy, transit, and transportation sectors, highlighting the critical need for joint efforts in water resources management. Recognizing the Caspian Sea as an arena for constructive collaboration among coastal nations, he stressed the mutual benefits of communication between the two countries in the region.
The Iranian diplomat underscored the necessity of ongoing dialogues concerning legal, security, and economic aspects of the Caspian Sea, affirming Tehran's readiness to host the upcoming summit.
Furthermore, Amir-Abdollahian criticized the presence of third-party military forces in the Caspian Sea, asserting that such actions are detrimental to regional interests.
In response, Rashit Meredov praised the positive bilateral relations, citing high-level meetings between officials from both nations as indicators of strong ties. He emphasized Turkmenistan's commitment to continuing cooperation with Iran in international forums.
Meredov echoed the sentiment that the Caspian Sea should be a realm of peace and cooperation, stressing the importance of bolstering economic collaboration and bilateral exchanges.
Additionally, he highlighted the significant environmental risks facing the Caspian Sea, urging collective attention to address these challenges.
Both foreign ministers emphasized the joint fight against terrorist and extremist groups in the region, alongside the necessity of cooperation regarding border waters.
