Media: Iran strikes Israeli command centre with Fattah-2 hypersonic missile, killing 7 officers PHOTO

04 March 2026 11:37

A video footage from Israel has shown that an Iranian hypersonic glide vehicle struck a fortified command centre of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), killing seven senior officers along with numerous other personnel, Military Watch writes.

The publication noted that the missile’s trajectory and speed resemble Russia’s “Oreshnik”, used against Ukraine, confirming Iran’s claims of hypersonic strikes on Israel.

Previously, Iran deployed the Fattah missile with a manoeuvrable reentry vehicle, but the Fattah-2, first used on February 28, 2026, is the only Iranian missile equipped with a true hypersonic glide vehicle.

US and Israeli air defence systems reportedly struggle to intercept such missiles: hypersonic glide vehicles manoeuvre at altitudes of several thousand kilometres and travel at extreme speeds, making them nearly invulnerable. The Fattah-2 strike on Israel’s command infrastructure demonstrates high precision and the ability to collect intelligence within Israeli territory.

Yuval Baseski, Vice President of Rafael Advanced Defence Systems, emphasised that hypersonic missiles usher in “a new era in air defence” and proposed a “layered defence” model, where multiple interceptors neutralise threats as they approach. However, implementing this approach would take several years and cost tens of billions of dollars, leaving Iran’s Fattah-2 arsenal a serious threat to both Israel and the United States.
