Minister: Israel claims victory over majority of Hamas brigades in Gaza Risk of multi-front war if hostage negotiations fail

30 August 2024 10:34

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have attacked several rocket launchers belonging to the Shiite movement Hezbollah, located in southern Lebanon.

"Israeli Air Force fighter jets have recently struck multiple Hezbollah rocket launchers in southern Lebanon that posed a threat to Israel," Caliber.Az reports, citing IDF.

The Israeli military also detected the launch of several projectiles aimed at Israeli territory. "One rocket crossed the Lebanese border near the Migdal Tefen area and landed in an open field. No casualties were reported. Sirens were activated in the area in accordance with protocol. The remaining projectiles did not cross into Israeli territory," the statement says.

Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant announced that the "majority of Hamas battalions and brigades" in the Gaza Strip have been defeated.

"Over the past 11 months, most of Hamas' brigades and battalions in Gaza have been decimated. Hamas military leader Mohammed Deif has been eliminated, along with several other high-ranking terrorists on a long list," he stated.

Gallant warned that if negotiations for the release of hostages fail, the country could face a multi-front war. He made this assessment during a meeting of the military cabinet and included it in an official document.

From the military leadership's perspective, reaching a deal not only would secure the return of the hostages but could also reduce tensions along the Lebanese border, where there is a standoff with the Shiite movement Hezbollah. However, the document also warns that failure to reach an agreement could lead to an "immediate escalation to a multi-front war."

The document was submitted to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a group of senior officials. According to the document, Israel is at a "strategic crossroads" and must make a critical decision.
