Britain considers troop deployment to Ukraine for up to five years

11 April 2025 10:33

Britain is considering sending troops to Ukraine under plans being discussed with allies, which could last up to five years.

Military leaders aim to train and strengthen the Ukrainian army to prevent another invasion by Russia, Caliber.Az reports per British media.

One option being discussed is a European-led force, co-led by Britain and France, to deter any future Russian aggression and offer respite to Ukraine's armed forces. French military officials suggest that Putin may not risk further attacks with Western forces stationed in Ukraine.

The proposed "reassurance force" would also assist in protecting Ukraine’s skies and seas, but its main goal would be to rebuild Ukraine's military capabilities. The withdrawal would be phased, with the final forces leaving after five years, according to sources.

Intelligence from British, Danish, and German officials suggests that Putin could be ready to launch another full-scale invasion in as little as five years. Defence Secretary John Healey confirmed that military planning has focused on four key objectives: securing the skies, securing the seas, supporting peace on land, and strengthening Ukraine’s forces.

In recent talks, Defence Secretary Healey stressed the importance of the Ukrainians' own military strength in deterring future Russian threats. "The Ukrainians themselves say our best security for the future will be the strength of our forces and our ability to deter Russia ourselves in the future,” he said.

Discussions have encountered delays as political decisions over the options for the force remain unclear, with concerns raised about sending troops without American backing. Healey emphasised that while the US is not directly involved in the reassurance force, they would play a key role in brokering a long-term peace.

Meanwhile, Healey is expected to announce a £450 million funding surge for Ukraine’s defence in upcoming talks aimed at purchasing drones and maintaining military equipment.
