Czech General Staff backs Ukraine’s path to NATO as security provider
The future membership of Ukraine in NATO is a “logical step,” Chief of the General Staff of the Czech Republic Karel Řehka said in an interview with POLITICO on the sidelines of the GLOBSEC forum in Prague.
Řehka noted that Ukraine’s accession to the Alliance would require political consensus among member states, but urged continued progress in that direction.
“I'm not saying it's easy. At the end of the day, it's about political consensus, but I think that's the direction we should be heading to," he added.
According to him, a key argument in favour of Ukraine’s membership is its role as a “security provider.”
Kyiv has pursued membership in the military alliance for years but has faced opposition from Germany and the United States, including during the Biden administration, with the issue largely sidelined since Donald Trump returned to the White House.
