NATO expansion in Asia-Pacific risks tensions, China tells Japan

11 April 2025 13:08

China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Lin Jian, warned that Japan's support for NATO's expansion into the Asia-Pacific region would result in adverse consequences for Tokyo.

"Japan is acting as the forefront of NATO's integration into the Asia-Pacific, and it will undoubtedly face negative consequences in the end," Lin emphasized during a briefing, commenting on NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte's recent visit to Tokyo, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

Lin also highlighted the historical context of Japan's actions, noting that in 2025, China will commemorate the 80th anniversary of its victory against Japanese imperialism and fascism. He called on Japan to "deeply understand the lessons of history" and to pursue the correct path of cooperation in the Asia-Pacific region.

Japan, he argued, should play a "constructive role" in maintaining peace, stability, development, and prosperity not only in the region but globally. Lin stated that China's "strong dissatisfaction and categorical protest" were triggered by the statements made by Japan and NATO regarding China during Rutte's visit.

The spokesperson criticized Japan and NATO for provoking confrontation in the Asia-Pacific region by meddling in China's internal affairs. He further asserted that Asian countries do not require bloc confrontations, warning that such actions are destabilizing.

"NATO is a regional defense military organization and should not extend beyond the geographical scope defined by its treaty. Expanding its power beyond its own borders is inappropriate," Lin concluded.

Earlier, during his visit, Rutte urged Japan to continue providing military assistance to Ukraine and to strengthen its cooperation with NATO to counter China's influence. Japan confirmed its intention to join NATO's mission, which coordinates military supplies and support to Ukraine.
