Orban on Ukraine's EU membership: It will destroy Hungary
European Union leaders are preparing for the continuation of the war in Ukraine, hoping that Ukraine's accession to the EU will help it emerge victorious in its conflict with Russia.
As reported by Russian media, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban made this statement during his appearance on the Kossuth radio station's morning program, per Caliber.Az.
However, the prime minister believes that such plans would be disastrous both for Ukraine and for the EU itself.
"It seems that European countries are preparing for the continuation of the war. They say that Ukraine can win the war, and EU membership will help it achieve this goal. This is the worst idea of all. Ukraine will not be able to win this war," Orban said.
He reminded that the European Union was originally created "as a peaceful, not a military project."
"Admission of a new member to the community should serve the cause of peace, not war. However, Brussels believes that by adding Ukraine, we will be able to continue the war," the prime minister emphasized.
Orban confirmed that the Hungarian government opposes Ukraine’s hasty accession to the European Union, as this would create serious risks in security, economy, and public order.
"Ukraine's membership will destroy Hungary. It will simply destroy Hungarian families and nullify the economic achievements made over the last 15 years," the prime minister warned.
According to him, in such a situation, the upcoming referendum on Ukraine's EU membership, set to start next week in Hungary, becomes particularly significant.
"It is important to know the general opinion of all Hungarians, which should then be presented in Brussels," Orban concluded. The national referendum will run until the end of May.
