Hungarian PM: US trade war to transform into peace soon

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is optimistic that the ongoing trade war initiated by the US will soon give way to peace, likely within the next one or two months.

"The situation is currently escalating in a spiral, but eventually, the Americans will reach agreements with all countries one by one," Orbán said. "This process will take a month or two, but I don’t believe it will last much longer. This tariff war will soon turn into a tariff peace," Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

Orbán also described the US tariffs as a tactical maneuver by President Donald Trump aimed at improving Washington's position in global trade. 

The Hungarian leader suggested that the use of tariffs was not as alarming as some might think, arguing that their economic impact would be less significant in the long term compared to other pressing global issues.

"Tariffs are less important for the world economy than the ongoing conflict in Ukraine or Ukraine’s potential EU membership," Orbán noted. He emphasised that the consequences of the Ukraine conflict and Ukraine’s integration into the European Union are far-reaching and will have long-term effects on global stability. 

On April 9, the US announced a 90-day suspension of trade tariffs affecting over 75 countries. On April 11, Chinese President Xi Jinping stated that China and the EU must stand together to resist intimidation from the US and defend their interests as well as international regulations.
