Russia, Ukraine alternately unwilling to end war, says Trump
US President Donald Trump stated that Russia and Ukraine have each, in turn, been unwilling to end the war.
Speaking at a White House briefing, Trump commented on questions regarding the Nobel Peace Prize and his efforts to resolve the conflict, Caliber.Az reports.
The American leader noted that despite his attempts, he has yet to achieve success in ending the final one, pointing out that when one side is ready to negotiate, the other is not.
“I'm trying to do Russia, Ukraine. And when Russia's ready, Ukraine's not. When Ukraine's ready, Russia's done,” Trump said, adding that both sides lose an average of about 25,000 people per month, underscoring the urgency of ending the war.
On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a full‑scale invasion of Ukraine from multiple directions, marking the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II; initial Russian plans to capture Kyiv quickly were repelled by stiff Ukrainian resistance backed by Western support.
The invasion dramatically intensified fighting that began in 2014, with Russia seizing large areas in the east and south, at times controlling roughly one‑fifth of Ukraine’s territory before Ukrainian counter‑offensives reclaimed significant ground.
The war triggered one of the largest displacement crises in decades, with millions of Ukrainians fleeing abroad and many more internally displaced, while relentless attacks on infrastructure deepened civilian hardship and strained humanitarian needs.
