At least 30 killed in armed attack on village in Nigeria's Kaduna state

27 July 2026 16:46

At least 30 people were killed after armed assailants attacked a village in Nigeria's northwestern Kaduna state overnight, Reuters reports, citing residents.

They said the attackers stormed Naridon village in Kauru Local Government Area shortly before midnight on July 27, opening fire on residents before setting homes ablaze.

Dogon Rana, secretary to the village head, said the gunmen shot indiscriminately and burned houses during the assault.

He noted that eight children were among those killed, while four other people were injured.

According to another resident, youth leader Ishaya Dawa, some victims were killed with bladed weapons and that several bodies had been taken to a local mortuary.

"The victims are women, children and the elderly," Dawa remarked.

Dawa stressed that the attackers fled after torching homes, while security personnel did not reach the village until the following morning, several hours after the assault.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

Armed gangs and other criminal groups have increasingly carried out deadly raids across northwestern and north-central Nigeria, posing a major security challenge for authorities.

The country's northeast continues to face a separate insurgency led by Boko Haram and its splinter faction, Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

Kaduna State Police spokesperson Mansur Hassan said the command would release further details on the incident later.
