Kazakhstan prioritises UN as universal forum for global issues President Tokayev says
Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has said that the efforts of BRICS will complement the work of the UN, which remains an indispensable and universal organisation.
President Tokayev made these remarks during an "outreach" session of BRICS Plus in Russia’s Kazan city, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"There is no doubt that the multilateral efforts of BRICS will harmoniously enhance the activities of the UN, which continues to be an essential and comprehensive structure," the Kazakh leader noted.
Earlier, Tokayev's advisor and press secretary, Berik Uali, said that Kazakhstan will refrain from submitting an application to join BRICS for the time being.
He said that Kazakhstan prefers the UN as a universal and irreplaceable international organisation where "all relevant global issues, including those related to building a just world order, can and should be discussed."
The BRICS group was established in 2006 by Brazil, Russia, India, and China, with South Africa joining in 2011.
As of January 1, 2024, Egypt, Iran, the UAE, and Ethiopia became new members. The summit in Kazan marked the first participation of these countries as full-fledged members.
