Russian diplomat slams Romania over unfounded claims of election interference
Spokesperson for the Russian Foreign Ministry Maria Zakharova has stated that Bucharest should apologize to Russia for its remarks regarding Moscow's "interference" in Romania's presidential election.
"I believe Bucharest should clarify its position. Moreover, given the amount of negativity once again directed at our country, Romania should also retract its statements," she said, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Zakharova emphasised that the accusations against Russia are baseless and ridiculous.
She also pointed out that these false claims were made at an official level, and that Romania should learn to speak the truth.
The presidential election was held in Romania on November 24. In the first round, the leading candidate was hard-right Călin Georgescu, who secured 22.94 per cent of the votes. He ran a campaign that heavily used TikTok, right-wing populist rhetoric, and conspiracy theories. Elena Lasconi, who supports partnerships with NATO and the US, garnered 19.18 per cent of the votes.
