Putin calls for UN potential to be fully unleashed

The UN remains a unique platform for dialogue, diplomacy and cooperation among states, Russian President Vladimir Putin has said, stressing that its potential is far from fully realised.

Speaking at the SCO Plus summit in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, he noted that the organisation was created as a mechanism for reconciling the interests of different countries and should retain this function, Caliber.Az reports, citing Kyrgyz media.

“The UN’s potential, it seems, is far from being fully realised. It is important to make efforts to increase the effectiveness of its work and expand the representation of its bodies, including the Security Council, through countries of the Global South and East,” Putin emphasised.

The Russian president called for adapting the UN’s work to changes in global politics and the economy.

In his words, there is currently no other universal mechanism for reconciling the interests of states.

“The world organisation should undoubtedly retain its role as the main mechanism for reconciling interests. It was created from the very beginning as a mechanism for reconciling interests,” Putin remarked, adding that the UN Charter should continue to serve as a key source of international law.
