Armenia: Russia ready to discuss restoring rail links to Azerbaijan, Türkiye

01 September 2026 09:26

Russian counterparts are ready to discuss the restoration of railway sections in Armenia leading to the borders with Azerbaijan and Türkiye, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan stated.

Speaking to Armenia’s Public Television, Mirzoyan explained that the proposal concerns investment in a project to restore the railway infrastructure, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

The minister added that he received relevant signals from the Russian side several days ago.

According to Mirzoyan, the details will depend on the terms under which the project is implemented.

The railway links in question are part of the Soviet-era network that once connected Armenia with both Azerbaijan and Türkiye but were largely closed after the collapse of the USSR and subsequent regional conflicts.

Armenia and Türkiye have recently revived efforts to reopen the Kars–Gyumri railway, with a bilateral working group holding technical discussions in 2025 and 2026 on rehabilitating the line.

Separately, Armenian and Russian officials discussed in February 2026 the restoration of the Gyumri–Akhurik–Türkiye border and Yeraskh–Nakhchivan railway sections, which would reopen additional regional transport routes.
