Kuwait says Iranian attack hits power, desalination facility

17 July 2026 14:14

An Iranian attack has damaged a power generation and water desalination plant in Kuwait, triggering a fire and disrupting several electricity generation units, the country's Ministry of Electricity, Water and Renewable Energy said.

In a statement, the ministry said the attack struck one of the country's key energy facilities.

"The attack damaged the facility, sparked a fire and affected several electricity generation units," the ministry said.

According to the ministry, emergency response plans were activated immediately to limit the impact of the incident and safeguard the stability of Kuwait's national electricity grid.

Firefighters quickly brought the blaze under control, while technical and emergency teams began assessing the damage, securing the site, and working to restore the affected generating units as rapidly as possible, the ministry added.

Earlier, Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its Aerospace Force had targeted a U.S. military base in Kuwait as part of the 12th wave of what it described as a retaliatory military operation.

The IRGC claimed the strike targeted a missile defence detection and tracking radar, several weapons depots, two High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) launchers, and missiles designated for the system. It also alleged that the attack triggered a large fire at the base.

The Iranian claims have not been independently verified, and there has been no immediate confirmation from U.S. authorities regarding the reported strike or the alleged damage to military assets.

Regional tensions have remained elevated since February, when the United States and Israel launched a joint offensive against Iran. Tehran responded with missile and drone attacks targeting Gulf states hosting U.S. military facilities.

Although Iran and the United States signed a Pakistan-brokered memorandum of understanding last month aimed at ending the conflict and paving the way for a lasting peace agreement, hostilities have intensified in recent days amid renewed confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz.
