US energy storage installations hit record as power demand surges

The United States added a record amount of energy storage capacity in the second quarter of 2026, as utilities and grid operators increasingly turned to batteries to strengthen grid reliability and cope with rapidly rising electricity demand, according to OilPrice.com.

The U.S. energy storage industry installed 20.2 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of new capacity during the April-June period, making it the strongest quarter on record, according to the U.S. Energy Storage Market Outlook Q3 2026 from the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA) and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence.

The latest figures brought total U.S. energy storage installations during the first half of 2026 to 30.8 GWh, highlighting the accelerating role of battery storage in the country's electricity system.

The utility-scale segment accounted for the overwhelming majority of the quarterly additions, installing 18 GWh. Seven projects with capacities of at least one gigawatt helped drive the surge. Arizona alone added more than 6.2 GWh of utility-scale storage during the quarter, setting a record for the largest quarterly deployment by any U.S. state.

The growth was not limited to large power projects. The residential sector added 657 megawatt-hours (MWh), while commercial and industrial installations reached 1.8 GWh. The latter segment was supported in part by growing electricity requirements from data centres, according to the report.

The rapid expansion reflects a broader transformation in the U.S. power market. As electricity consumption rises, particularly from data centres and other energy-intensive industries, battery storage is increasingly being used to balance supply and demand and provide electricity when renewable generation is unavailable.

SEIA and Benchmark Mineral Intelligence have responded to the stronger-than-expected deployment by raising their forecast for U.S. energy storage installations through 2030 by 11.5%. They now expect annual installations to exceed 110 GWh, with cumulative storage capacity reaching 683 GWh by the end of the decade.

“The upward revision comes as the industry continues to set deployment records, with more than 10% of all energy storage capacity currently installed in the U.S. coming online in Q2 alone,” SEIA said.

The geographic distribution of storage development is also changing. While California and Texas have historically dominated the U.S. battery storage market, new projects are rapidly emerging in other states.

“Energy storage is no longer just a California and Texas story anymore,” said Shan Tomouk, BESS & Energy Lead at Benchmark Minerals. “We’re seeing strong pipeline growth in Arizona, Nevada, Oregon, Colorado and several other states.”

The growing importance of battery storage is further illustrated by its contribution to the U.S. electricity grid. Battery energy storage supplied more electricity to the grid during the first eight months of 2026 than throughout the whole of 2025, according to the report.

The expansion follows several years of rapid growth in utility-scale battery capacity. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said last month that utility-scale battery storage capacity had grown at an average annual rate of about 70% over the previous three years.

The latest figures suggest that storage is moving from a supporting technology toward a central component of the U.S. power system, as utilities seek greater flexibility and reliability amid surging electricity demand.
