Lithuania expands air shield with new NASAMS deliveries
Lithuania’s Air Force has begun receiving components of the Norwegian medium-range air defence system NASAMS, LRT reports.
Military officials said deliveries started late last week. Lithuania has already taken delivery of launchers, fire control centres, radars, and other equipment that will be used to establish a new air defence battery.
Authorities said the system will significantly enhance the country’s existing air defence capabilities.
NASAMS is designed to engage aircraft, helicopters, unmanned aerial vehicles, and cruise missiles at ranges of several dozen kilometres.
Lithuania has operated NASAMS since 2020. In 2023, the country ordered a second battery, which is expected to be fully integrated by the end of this year.
The Lithuanian Armed Forces said the new battery will improve airspace monitoring, accelerate response times, and expand the area of coverage.
