Magnitude 5.7 quake hits southern Mexico
A magnitude 5.7 earthquake struck southern Mexico on February 8, according to Mexico’s National Seismological Service and the US Geological Survey (USGS).
The quake occurred at 3:42 p.m. local time, with its epicentre located approximately three kilometres from the town of San Miguel Coatlán in the southern state of Oaxaca. The earthquake originated at a depth of about 18.8 kilometres, the USGS said, Caliber.Az reports.
Mexico’s seismic alert system was activated in Mexico City following the tremor, although residents in the capital did not report feeling any shaking, according to witnesses cited by Reuters.
Authorities have not reported any casualties or damage to infrastructure so far. Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most seismically active regions, frequently experiencing earthquakes due to the movement of tectonic plates along the Pacific coast.
