Media: India defends its ties with Russia amid US pressure
India is standing firm on its energy strategy despite mounting pressure from the United States over its purchases of Russian oil, NDTV reports.
According to Caliber.Az, the Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has adopted a defiant stance as US President Donald Trump intensifies threats of tariffs in an attempt to curb India’s oil imports from Russia.
According to NDTV, during a recent address, Prime Minister Modi emphasised the importance of safeguarding India’s economic interests amid global uncertainty.
His focus on domestic manufacturing and consumption echoes his long-standing “Make in India” initiative, which has gained renewed significance following the announcement of US tariffs.
The channel noted that India has become a primary target for Trump’s efforts to pressure Russian President Vladimir Putin into ending the war in Ukraine. The US President has openly criticised India for joining the BRICS group of emerging economies and maintaining close relations with Russia.
However, India remains resolute in defending its ties with Moscow. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs described the relationship as a “strong and time-tested partnership,” underscoring New Delhi’s commitment to maintaining close bilateral relations despite external pressures.
This stance highlights India’s determination to balance its strategic interests amid a complex global geopolitical environment.
