Media: Poland plans to build electronic barrier along Ukrainian border
Poland plans to construct a modern electronic barrier along its border with Ukraine.
The project, estimated at around 450 million zlotys (approximately $121 million), will cover the territory of the Nadbużański Border Unit, with the contractor selection process already underway, RMF24 reports.
The barrier will include underground cables to detect seismic activity, fibre-optic lines for data transmission, and power cables. Above ground, poles equipped with daytime and thermal cameras will provide 24-hour monitoring of the area.
All system data will be transmitted directly to the unit’s observation centre for analysis by border guards.
Funding for the project was initially expected from the EU SAFE program, but implementation was blocked by a presidential veto. Intense consultations are now ongoing to secure the remaining necessary funds.
The decision to build the electronic barrier comes in response to the “threat arising from Russia’s armed aggression against Ukraine.” The barrier is designed not only to prevent illegal border crossings but also to enhance the detection and response to any incidents threatening national security.
