At least 2,056 people have been killed and around 3,900 injured after two powerful earthquakes struck Myanmar on March 28, according to the country's military authorities.
The quakes, with magnitudes of 7.7 and 6.4, caused widespread destruction, particularly in the central Sagaing region, local officials reported, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Around 270 people remain missing.
The tremors were also felt in neighbouring Thailand, where the death toll in Bangkok has risen to 17, with 32 people injured and 83 still unaccounted for.
Authorities fear the number of casualties could rise further due to the scale of the devastation.
Note that, rescue operations are underway in Myanmar. The first 72 hours following the disaster are considered critical for locating survivors, as chances of survival without water decline sharply thereafter.
International search and rescue teams from China, Russia, and the United States have been deployed to assist efforts. Myanmar’s military government, which has been engaged in a civil conflict since the 2021 coup, has made a rare appeal for foreign aid as the crisis further strains the country’s already weakened infrastructure.
