NATO to offer Ukraine long-term military support Amidst membership aspirations
NATO plans to unveil a new mission at its 75th anniversary summit in Washington, providing Ukraine with a consolidated headquarters in Germany to coordinate extensive military assistance.
This initiative is aimed at reinforcing NATO's commitment to Ukraine's security and serving as a bridge towards eventual membership, despite the alliance's current reluctance to initiate membership negotiations, Caliber.Az reports citing foreign media.
The mission, named NATO Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU), aims to streamline and enhance the efficiency of military aid currently provided by various member states. It will oversee the coordination of air defences, artillery, fighter jets, arms supplies, and training for Ukrainian military personnel. The establishment of NSATU is seen as a strategic move to consolidate diverse aid efforts under NATO auspices, addressing previous challenges of coordination and efficiency.
Although the mission does not signify NATO's engagement as a combatant in Ukraine's conflict with Russia, it underscores the alliance's steadfast support for Ukraine's right to self-defense. The decision comes amid expectations that the initiative will mollify Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky's aspirations for closer integration with NATO, following his disappointment at the previous summit where NATO refrained from offering a clear timeline for membership negotiations.
While NATO's stance remains firm on not immediately opening accession talks with Ukraine, the establishment of NSATU represents a significant commitment to Ukraine's defence and security, aligning with efforts to strengthen bilateral ties and uphold stability in the region.
