EU Commission approves Poland’s right to reinstate Schengen border checks for 30 days
The European Commission has confirmed Poland’s right to temporarily reintroduce border controls at its internal Schengen borders with Germany and Lithuania.
Speaking at a briefing in Brussels, European Commission spokesperson Markus Lamert said that Poland notified the Commission about the temporary reinstatement of controls on these borders, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
“Under the Schengen Code, EU countries are entitled to temporarily restore border controls for up to 30 days, provided that the measures are targeted, limited in time, and designed to minimise adverse impacts on cross-border movement,” Lamert explained.
The Polish Interior Ministry cited “evolving security threats” as the primary justification, pointing to increased irregular migration attempts, potential Russian hybrid threats, and the need to secure NATO’s Security Assistance and Training for Ukraine (NSATU) logistics hub in Rzeszów-Jasionka, near the Ukrainian border.
Poland, a frontline state in NATO’s support for Ukraine, hosts critical supply routes for military aid, with the Netherlands set to deploy F-35 fighter jets to Poland from September to December 2025 to protect this hub. Recent incidents, such as Russian drone incursions reported over Polish airspace in June 2025 and heightened Russian military activity near Kaliningrad, have amplified Warsaw’s concerns.
