Polish prosecutors ask president to testify in Constitutional Court case

Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office has asked President Karol Nawrocki to testify as a witness as part of an investigation into the alleged deprivation of Constitutional Court judges of their authority to issue rulings.

National Prosecutor’s Office spokeswoman Anna Adamiak said the prosecutor asked the president to indicate a convenient date and location for the questioning, Caliber.Az reports via Polish media.

The investigation was launched on April 21, 2026, following a notification of a possible crime submitted by two Constitutional Court judges.

The case concerns actions that allegedly harmed the administration of justice and four Constitutional Court judges elected by the Sejm on March 13, 2026: Marcin Dziurda, Krystian Markiewicz, Anna Korwin-Piotrowska, and Maciej Taborowski. They were denied the right to issue judicial rulings.

The prosecutor’s office said more than 40 witnesses had been questioned as part of the investigation, including officials from the Presidential Chancellery and the Constitutional Court. Documents relevant to the case have also been seized.

“After assessing the body of evidence, taking into account the subject matter of the proceedings, the prosecutor deemed it necessary to carry out another investigative action in the form of questioning President of the Republic of Poland Karol Nawrocki as a witness,” Adamiak explained.

According to her, the questioning is necessary to fully establish the circumstances of the case and provide a legal assessment of what happened.

On March 13, the Sejm elected six Constitutional Court judges. Two of them took their oaths at the Presidential Palace, while the others did so during a ceremony in the Sejm.

The Presidential Chancellery had previously expressed doubts about the procedure for appointing the judges, citing a legal analysis that had been conducted.
