Türkiye, UN reaffirm strong partnership during Fidan–Guterres meeting
Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held talks with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres on the sidelines of the 17th BRICS Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, as part of Türkiye’s diplomatic engagement with global institutions.
According to a statement posted on the Turkish Foreign Ministry’s official X (formerly Twitter) account, the meeting took place on the margins of the summit, where Fidan and Guterres reviewed the ongoing cooperation between Türkiye and the UN, Caliber.Az reports.
A spokesperson for the UN confirmed the encounter, stating, “The Secretary-General and the Minister discussed the strong partnership between Türkiye and the United Nations.”
The two also addressed pressing international issues, including the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the deteriorating security situation in the Middle East. Additionally, they discussed preparations for the next informal meeting on the Cyprus issue.
The United Nations has announced that the informal talks on Cyprus will take place at its headquarters in New York on July 16–17, bringing together the relevant parties for a renewed round of discussions.
