New Zealand announces additional sanctions against Russia
New Zealand's Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced new sanctions in response to Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine. Peters emphasized that Russia's actions constitute a violation of the rules-based international order and threaten nuclear security, particularly regarding the occupation of the Zaporizhzhya Nuclear Power Plant.
The latest sanctions target individuals and entities involved in the illegal occupation of the plant, as well as those linked to Russia's military-industrial complex and Belarusian supporters of the invasion, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Peters highlighted New Zealand's collaboration with over 35 countries to impose these sanctions, aimed at increasing the costs for Russia's military operations.
Since the implementation of the Russia Sanctions Act in March 2022, New Zealand has sanctioned more than 1,700 individuals and entities, including key figures in the Russian government and military. This latest round includes five individuals and six entities.
Additionally, New Zealand has pledged over $130 million in support for Ukraine, encompassing military aid, humanitarian assistance, and funds for legal processes related to human rights monitoring. The government has enacted various measures, including banning imports of Russian oil, gas, and coal, imposing tariffs on Russian imports, and restricting the export of certain goods.
