Global ranking reveals most remote-work-friendly cities
Tokyo has claimed the top spot in the world for cities that perfectly blend remote work with leisure, according to a recent study by the Swiss firm International Workplace Group (IWG).
The Japanese capital’s appeal lies in a combination of practical and lifestyle factors. High-speed internet, a reliable transport network, strong safety standards, and a vibrant cultural scene make it ideal for digital professionals. On top of that, Tokyo offers quick access to beaches, mountains, and national parks, allowing residents and visitors to seamlessly escape the urban hustle for nature.
A key draw for international remote workers is Japan’s digital nomad visa, introduced in April 2024, which permits stays of up to 12 months. This policy further strengthens Tokyo’s position as a hub for long-term remote work.
The IWG report highlights the following as the world’s most remote-work-friendly cities:
-
Tokyo, Japan
-
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
-
Budapest, Hungary
-
Seoul, South Korea
-
Barcelona, Spain
-
Beijing, China
-
Lisbon, Portugal
-
Rome, Italy
-
Paris, France
-
Valletta, Malta
Mark Dixon, founder of IWG, emphasised that flexible work arrangements not only enhance work-life balance but also help prevent burnout and boost productivity, making cities that support remote work increasingly attractive to professionals worldwide.
