Orban seeks Erdogan's backing on Hungarian "peace mission" in Ukraine

10 July 2024 13:07

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has reached out to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, seeking his backing for Hungary's peacekeeping initiative in Ukraine.

The meeting between the two leaders took place in Washington during the NATO summit, where discussions focused on the ongoing Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Caliber.Az reports citing Russian media.

Orban requested Erdogan's support for Hungary's peacekeeping efforts, highlighting Türkiye's successful mediation role in the conflict thus far.

"Prime Minister Viktor Orban held talks in Washington with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the Hungarian peacekeeping mission. During the conversation, the Russian-Ukrainian war was discussed. Viktor Orban asked for support for the Hungarian peacekeeping mission, given that Türkiye has so far been the only successful mediator in the conflict," Bertalan Havasi, the Prime Minister's press chief said in a statement.

The most important issue at the current NATO summit remains the war in Ukraine, where Orban arrived with a "peace mission" of his own, following his visits to Kyiv, Moscow and Beijing, having received much criticism for his trip to Moscow from Hungary's allies.
