Special envoy: US considers replacing UNRWA with new humanitarian aid system

20 May 2025 21:09

US Special Envoy for Hostage Response Adam Boehler has said that the new US-backed mechanism could potentially replace the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

"Perhaps there needs to be a replacement for UNRWA. We’ve had a lot of issues with the U.N. And if this works, if it gets food to the Palestinian people who need it, then I greatly favor it," Boehler said, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

On May 18, Israel allowed the entry of a basic volume of food into the Gaza Strip, based on a recommendation from the military, due to the operational necessity of intensifying combat operations against the Palestinian group Hamas.

On May 19, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that Tel Aviv intends to control all of the Gaza Strip's territory and will not allow Hamas to loot humanitarian aid.
