Azerbaijani, Spanish officials focus on South Caucasus security during key talks
During her official visit to Spain, Speaker of the Azerbaijani Parliament Sahiba Gafarova has met with President of the Congress of Deputies of Spain, Francina Armengol, to discuss bilateral cooperation, regional developments, and security in the South Caucasus.
Francina Armengol welcomed Gafarova with warm remarks and expressed confidence that the visit would contribute meaningfully to strengthening inter-parliamentary relations between Spain and Azerbaijan, Caliber.Az reports via local media.
She also commended Azerbaijan for the successful hosting of the COP29 climate conference and noted the active participation of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, during which major climate-related decisions were made. Gafarova thanked Armengol for the invitation and underscored the importance of maintaining high-level parliamentary dialogue.
She expressed optimism that Prime Minister Sánchez’s visit to Azerbaijan within the COP29 framework, along with the implementation of agreements reached during talks with President Ilham Aliyev, would further bolster bilateral ties. The sides also explored the potential for enhancing Azerbaijani-Spanish economic cooperation, particularly in the field of renewable energy. Gafarova noted that both countries have promising opportunities to expand collaboration in this and other strategic sectors.
Regional security and developments in the South Caucasus were also high on the agenda. Gafarova briefed her Spanish counterpart on the current status of the normalisation of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, the history of the conflict, Azerbaijan’s restoration of its territorial integrity and sovereignty, and the ongoing reconstruction efforts in territories liberated from occupation. The meeting concluded with an exchange of views on a range of other issues of mutual interest, reaffirming both countries’ commitment to deepening bilateral relations across various sectors.
