House approves Trump’s sweeping $1.5 trillion spending and tax bill by one vote
The US House of Representatives has passed a far-reaching legislative package championed by President Donald Trump, unofficially dubbed the “Big Beautiful Bill,” following weeks of internal Republican wrangling that nearly derailed the effort.
According to Axios, the bill passed by the narrowest of margins—215 votes in favour, 214 against—with not a single Democrat supporting the measure, Caliber.Az reports.
The legislation aims to extend Trump-era tax breaks and slash federal spending by $1.5 trillion, while also implementing new conservative policy priorities.
“The House of Representatives voted on May 22 to pass President Trump’s Big Beautiful Bill after weeks of internal divisions among Republicans that repeatedly threatened the fate of the bill, which was supported only by Republican members,” Axios reported.
The bill proposes to extend the 2017 tax cuts enacted during Trump’s first term and includes steep budget cuts across various sectors. It introduces work requirements for Medicaid recipients and rolls back several tax breaks included in President Joe Biden’s 2022 Inflation Reduction Act.
Although the bill has cleared a major legislative hurdle, its future in the Senate remains uncertain. “This is an important step towards signing the bill into law, although the Senate is likely to make significant changes that could displease conservatives in the lower house,” Axios noted.
President Trump celebrated the bill’s passage with a triumphant post on Truth Social, hailing the legislation as one of the most consequential in American history.
“‘THE ONE, BIG, BEAUTIFUL BILL’ has PASSED the House of Representatives! This is arguably the most significant piece of Legislation that will ever be signed in the History of our Country!” Trump wrote. “The Bill includes MASSIVE Tax CUTS, No Tax on Tips, No Tax on Overtime, Tax Deductions when you purchase an American Made Vehicle, along with strong Border Security measures, Pay Raises for our ICE and Border Patrol Agents, Funding for the Golden Dome, ‘TRUMP Savings Accounts’ for newborn babies, and much more!”
He also praised Speaker of the House Mike Johnson and the Republican leadership for their role in securing the bill’s passage.
“Great job by Speaker Mike Johnson, and the House Leadership, and thank you to every Republican who voted YES on this Historic Bill! Now, it’s time for our friends in the United States Senate to get to work, and send this Bill to my desk AS SOON AS POSSIBLE! There is no time to waste,” Trump added.
The president also launched a scathing critique of Democrats, accusing them of being disconnected from voters and stuck in ideological debates over immigration and gender policy. “The Democrats have lost control of themselves, and are aimlessly wandering around, showing no confidence, grit, or determination,” he wrote. “They have forgotten their landslide loss in the Presidential Election, and are warped in the past, hoping someday to revive Open Borders for the World’s criminals to be able to pour into our Country, men to be able to play in women’s sports, and transgender for everybody. They don’t realise that these things, and so many more like them, will NEVER AGAIN happen!”
