Germany steps up NATO defence with new deployment to Lithuania
Germany and its NATO partners remain resolute in their commitment to defend the alliance's territory, Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated during a visit to Vilnius, Lithuania.
The visit coincided with the deployment of a German brigade to Lithuania aimed at bolstering the security of NATO's eastern flank, particularly in the context of rising tensions following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.
Speaking to reporters, Merz emphasized the importance of collective defence within NATO. "Together with our partners, we are determined to defend the alliance territory against any aggression. The security of our Baltic allies is also our security," he declared, reinforcing Germany's commitment to regional stability.
The visit comes ahead of NATO's upcoming summit next month, where leaders are set to discuss strategies for addressing capability gaps within the alliance. The summit will also address how much each member state should contribute to defence spending in light of the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Merz outlined the goals for the upcoming summit, stating, "European defence capabilities must be strengthened in the long term and our defence industry must expand its capacities." His comments reflect Germany's recognition of the need for enhanced defence capabilities across Europe to counter threats, particularly from Russia.
Germany's position within NATO is increasingly under scrutiny, especially given the ongoing criticisms from US President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly voiced concerns over the disproportionate financial burden placed on the United States for European security. Despite these pressures, Merz underscored Germany’s ongoing investment in defence, including the deployment of hundreds of Bundeswehr soldiers to Lithuania.
Additionally, Merz highlighted the importance of NATO unity, particularly in the face of Russian aggression. "We stand firmly alongside Ukraine, but we also stand together as Europeans as a whole, and we play as a team with the US whenever possible," he added, reaffirming Germany's commitment to both European security and transatlantic cooperation.
