Canada’s capital moves to remove Trump’s name from street

28 August 2026 15:58

Canada’s capital will remove the name of US President Donald Trump from Trump Avenue, amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and Canada, CTV News reports.

Ottawa City Councillor Riley Brockington said once the new city council takes office, he will lead the renaming process together with residents of the territory.

Under city policy, a street name change requires the approval of at least 50% of residents plus one additional vote.

Ottawa Mayor Mark Sutcliffe made clear that renaming the street would involve a lot of challenges, as residents would have to change all documents bearing their home address.

He added that he does not want anything in Ottawa named after Donald Trump, but noted that the final decision rests with the residents of Trump Avenue. There are 62 homes on the street.

On August 25, Trump said Lake Ontario could be renamed Lake America.

Meanwhile, 50% US import tariffs on certain categories of Canadian goods took effect on August 22. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney confirmed that Ottawa had decided to suspend trade talks with Washington and would impose retaliatory tariffs, which are expected to take effect on September 8.

Carney claims that a trade war had already begun between the US and Canada and argued that Washington had initiated it.
