Russia may reimpose mandatory COVID-19 vaccination for certain citizen groups

Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that the Russian government is monitoring the situation with the increase in coronavirus infection cases in the country.

He said certain categories of citizens in the regions may again be vaccinated against COVID-19 on a mandatory basis, Kommersant reports.

During the press call, Peskov said that Russia’s President Vladimir Putin receives daily reports from the government, the Ministry of Health and Rospotrebnadzor (Federal Service for Surveillance on Consumer Rights Protection and Human Wellbeing).

According to the Kremlin spokesman, "the president does not and cannot lack information."

“If it is necessary, if this exponential dynamic continues to go up, then this (the return of mandatory vaccination) cannot be ruled out, of course,” he said.

Over the past day, for the first time since April 6, more than 14,000 people infected with coronavirus in Russia. Compared to the previous day, the number of cases increased by more than 50 per cent. This week, Rospotrebnadzor recommended people from vulnerable groups wear face masks in public places.
