Russian planes near Polish borders prompt Warsaw to scramble fighter jets
Poland and its allies have scrambled aircraft due to the activity of Russian long-range aviation.
The statement was made by the operational command of the Polish Armed Forces, TASS reported.
"We have information that there is intensive activity of the Russian Federation's long-range aviation. We warn that there is an activation of Polish and allied aviation that could result in an increase in noise levels, especially in the southeast of the country," the command said in X message.
Early in the morning, Russia launched a missile strike on Kyiv and Ukraine's second-largest city of Kharkiv.
"Explosions in the city! Details later. Don't leave the shelters!" Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko said on the Telegram messaging app.
Poland - a NATO and EU member - is a staunch ally of Ukraine as the Russian invasion nears its second anniversary.
In November 2022, a Ukrainian air defence missile fell in the Polish village of Przewodow near the border, killing two civilians.
The explosion occurred at a grain storage site near a school about six kilometres (four miles) from the border during another intensive Russian bombardment of Ukraine.
