Russian soldiers riot over dire medical conditions in Novosibirsk British Defence Intelligence reports
The Russian army is facing serious issues with medical care at all levels, according to the latest update from British Defence Intelligence on X.
Russian independent Astra news reported on November 14, 2024 that dozens of injured Russian soldiers rioted in Novosibirsk, south central Russia, due to inadequate medical care, Caliber.Az reports.
Thus, a group of soldiers from the 41st Combined Arms Army of Russia’s Central Military District reportedly rebelled against their unit commander over allegations of mistreatment and inadequate medical care.
Refusing to return to the frontlines without proper treatment, the soldiers are said to have vandalised their barracks, breaking windows and causing other damage, with ten reportedly fleeing the military compound.
The incident underscores growing discontent within the Russian armed forces as they face significant challenges on the battlefield. Chronic shortages of armoured vehicles and the ongoing threat posed by Uncrewed Aerial Vehicles have severely delayed the evacuation of wounded soldiers.
These delays are believed to increase the likelihood of severe injuries and higher mortality rates among those awaiting medical assistance.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, Russia has sustained over 700,000 casualties since the conflict escalated in February 2022. Of these, around 500,000 Russian personnel have reportedly been wounded.
This immense scale of casualties is placing severe pressure on the Russian military medical system, which is struggling with logistical challenges and a critical shortage of medical staff. Analysts suggest these issues are unlikely to be resolved in the coming months, with significant strains expected to persist for at least the next three months.
The ongoing difficulties highlight the broader challenges facing the Russian military as it grapples with the prolonged conflict.
