German Bundeswehr boosts mobility with €770 million Rheinmetall vehicle contract

04 August 2025 20:23

Rheinmetall has announced a major contract award from the Bundeswehr to deliver more than 1,000 logistic vehicles, valued at approximately €770 million gross.

The order includes a wide range of military transport solutions, underscoring the German Army’s ongoing efforts to boost its mobility and operational readiness, Caliber.Az reports, citing the company.

According to Rheinmetall, the order covers 963 vehicles equipped with swap-body systems, including models with protected driver cabins. These vehicles will be delivered with a mix of flatbeds and tarpaulin-arch superstructures, designed for efficient cargo handling in field operations. In addition, the Bundeswehr has requested 425 unprotected transport vehicles (UTVs) in both 4x4 and 8x8 configurations.

“As a reliable partner of the Bundeswehr, we are delighted to be delivering additional vehicles and thus contributing to the mobility and operational readiness of the armed forces,” said André Barthel, Chairman of the Board of Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH (RMMV).

The company confirmed that the full delivery of the roughly 1,400 vehicles is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025, with the contracts already booked for the third quarter of the year.

The UTV orders are part of a broader framework agreement signed in July 2024 — the largest logistics vehicle order in Rheinmetall’s history — allowing for the delivery of up to 6,500 vehicles with a total potential value of €3.5 billion. The framework agreement offers the Bundeswehr long-term flexibility to procure various UTV models, including the newly introduced 4x4 UTV 3.5t variant, which maximizes compatibility with the existing UTV fleet.

The UTV family, based on Rheinmetall’s robust HX platform, has been a cornerstone of Bundeswehr logistics since 2017. To date, around 7,000 HX vehicles have been delivered to Germany’s armed forces, along with swap-body systems and heavy-duty trailers.

Used by over a dozen countries — including the UK, Australia, Sweden, and Ukraine — the HX family enhances interoperability in multinational missions. With more than 20,000 units in service globally, the new Bundeswehr order further reinforces the vehicle line’s reputation for reliability and battlefield performance.
