Scholz's party opposes deployment of US missiles in Germany

The Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD), headed by Chancellor Olaf Scholz, opposed the deployment of long-range American missiles on the territory of the country in 2026.

Senior SPD representatives, who work on defence and security issues, wrote a note for colleagues. In it, they noted that they intend to hold a debate in the Bundestag in September to discuss the issue, Caliber.Az reports, citing foreign media.

"The current debate around the announced deployment of long-range weapons systems in Germany worries us all," the note said.

Rolf Mützenich, leader of the SPD faction in the lower house of the Bundestag, sees one of the key issues as whether Berlin will have any say in the use of the weapons.

"Not every weapon immediately makes Germany safer," he emphasised.
