Suspect arrested in fatal shooting of two Israeli embassy staff members in Washington VIDEO OF ARREST
Authorities have arrested a suspect in connection with the fatal shooting of two Israeli Embassy staff members outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., Police Chief Pamela Smith confirmed.
The suspect, identified as 30-year-old Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, was taken into custody at the scene shortly after the incident and is currently being questioned by law enforcement. He had no prior criminal history or known connection to law enforcement agencies, Smith said during a press conference, Caliber.Az reports.
Smith stated that Rodriguez attempted to enter the museum after the shooting but was stopped by security. The suspect chanted "Free, Free Palestine" after being taken into custody, D.C. Police Chief Pamela Smith said. Police believe Rodriguez acted alone.
The victims, a man and a woman who worked for the Israeli Embassy, were shot at close range as they exited a private event at the museum on the evening of May 21. Emergency responders found them unresponsive at the scene.
He also directed authorities to the location of the weapon, which was later recovered.
Israeli Ambassador to the United States, Yechiel Leiter, revealed that the two victims were a couple who were soon to be engaged.
“The young man had just bought a ring this week and was planning to propose next week in Jerusalem,” he said.
D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser emphasised that there is “no active threat” to the public and reassured residents of ongoing efforts to ensure the safety of Jewish institutions across the capital.
