Trump calls for governors to join battle against carp in Great Lakes
US President Donald Trump is seeking an environmental achievement ahead of the midterm elections, turning his attention to the Great Lakes and other critical water bodies in the United States.
In a post on Truth Social, Trump said he is collaborating with Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer to “try to save The Great Lakes from the rather violent and destructive Asian Carp, which is rapidly taking over Lake Michigan, and all of the beautiful surrounds,” People reports.
He added that he plans to enlist other governors in the effort, naming Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, New York, and jokingly, “the future Governor of Canada, Mark Carney, who I know will be happy to contribute to this worthy cause," Trump continued, taking one of his favorite swipes at the Canadian prime minister after a year of proposing that Canada could become a US state.
Trump’s post also included an update on the Great Salt Lake in Utah, warning that it “will have no water” in a short period if immediate action is not taken. “Only 'TRUMP' CAN DO IT! President DONALD J. TRUMP,” he concluded.
The carp removal campaign targets multiple species of invasive fish, including silver, bighead, and black carp. Introduced from Asia in the 1970s for aquaculture, these species escaped into Midwestern waterways, spreading rapidly and competing with native fish for food and habitat.
It remains unclear whether Trump’s newly announced efforts will integrate with ongoing federal and state initiatives to control carp populations in the Great Lakes, Kansas River, Cumberland and Tennessee River watersheds, or represent a separate undertaking.
