Trump extends formal invitation to Romanian president for Washington talks
Romanian presidential adviser Cristian Diaconescu has confirmed that US President Donald Trump has formally invited Romania’s President Nicușor Dan to Washington for a bilateral meeting, and urged that arrangements be finalised “as soon as possible”.
Speaking exclusively to Digi24 on July 20, Diaconescu said the two leaders enjoyed “a very constructive dialogue” when they last met a month ago, and that the invitation was transmitted through official channels, Caliber.Az reports.
He stressed that the speed with which the visit can be arranged depends on agreeing a joint agenda that reflects both countries’ immediate interests, and on securing the appropriate level of access in Washington.
“President Trump is highly interested in engaging with Romania, which remains a significant player on NATO’s eastern flank,” Diaconescu added.
Foreign Minister Oana Ţoiu will travel to New York and Washington in September to oversee preparations, having already liaised with US Vice‑President J. D. Vance and Senator Marco Rubio during the recent Hague summit.
She confirmed that dates will be announced once logistical details and scheduling are “firmly in place”.
Diaconescu noted that several Romanian institutions maintain ongoing dialogue with their American counterparts, underscoring the wider diplomatic effort to bring the meeting to fruition.
