Turkish media: European leaders urged Zelenskyy to patch things up with Trump
European politicians have sent a message to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, urging him to reconcile with U.S. President Donald Trump, as they do not want to face Russia alone, Turkish columnist Deniz Berktay wrote in an article for newspaper Cumhuriyet.
He noted that on March 2, a non-formal summit of leaders from several European countries took place in London, Caliber.Az reports.
The participants discussed the conflict between Moscow and Kyiv, as well as the security system in the region. After the meeting, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated that any potential security guarantees for Ukraine must be supported by the United States.
According to the author, this suggests that European countries are hesitant to challenge Moscow without support from Washington.
"These countries couldn’t say to Ukraine: 'If the U.S. is not there, we are here.' Instead, they urged Zelensky to reconcile with Trump," Berktay emphasized.
The columnist added that amid this, the Ukrainian leader began "sending messages" about normalizing relations with the U.S. Specifically, Zelensky expressed a readiness to quickly finalize a deal on joint mineral resource development.
On February 28, Zelenskyy and Trump held talks at the White House, which ended in a verbal altercation. As a result, Kyiv and Washington canceled the signing of a deal on the extraction of rare earth metals, which was supposed to be the main topic of discussion.
Later, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov commented on the situation, noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin took into account the developments between the American and Ukrainian leaders.
