Israeli, US defence chiefs discuss Iran, hostage release from Gaza
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz held a meeting with U.S. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth to discuss a range of key issues, including the release of hostages from Gaza, the removal of Hamas from power in the enclave, and the ongoing security challenges posed by Iran.
In a statement on X following the meeting, Katz expressed gratitude for U.S. support, particularly under the Donald Trump administration, in expediting military aid to Israel, Caliber.Az reports.
He said, "I thanked him for the real Donald Trump administration’s support in expediting military aid to Israel and its unwavering commitment to Israel’s security."
Katz emphasized the shared priorities between the U.S. and Israel, stating, "We agreed: All hostages must be brought home, and Hamas rule in Gaza must be eliminated." He further underscored the threat posed by Iran, describing it as "the greatest threat to regional security."
"Iran remains the greatest threat to regional security – we will work together to prevent it from obtaining nuclear weapons," Katz continued.
The Israeli defense minister concluded his remarks by reinforcing the strength of the U.S.-Israel relationship, declaring, "Our bond is unbreakable."
In January 2025, Israel and Hamas reached a ceasefire agreement that included a phased exchange of hostages and prisoners. The first phase, initiated on January 19, involved the release of Israeli and American hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners. The subsequent phases aimed to secure the release of all remaining hostages, establish a permanent ceasefire, and facilitate the withdrawal of Israeli troops from Gaza.
So far, Israel and Hamas have successfully exchanged a total of approximately 160 hostages as part of the ceasefire agreement. This includes both Israeli and American nationals held by Hamas, in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.
However, the implementation of these phases has encountered significant challenges. In February, Israel delayed the release of Palestinian prisoners, citing concerns over Hamas's handling of hostage ceremonies. Hamas accused Israel of preventing aid and hindering Palestinians from returning home.
