Druze community: Israel rushed to issue threats against Syria
A prominent leader of Syria’s Druze community, who was involved in resolving the conflict in the village of Jaramana, commented on Israel's "premature intervention" in the situation.
Thus, Druze leader stated that Israeli authorities should have verified the facts before publicly issuing threats to the new Syrian authorities, Caliber.Az reports, citing Israeli media.
According to him, the conflict in Jaramana was sparked by a drug trafficker who killed a security officer, and there was no involvement of Islamist militants, contrary to the portrayal by Israel.
Meanwhile, on March 1, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz issued a warning to Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa, demanding an end to the military operation in the Druze village of Jaramana, located in the suburbs of Damascus.
To recall, clashes between forces affiliated with Syria’s new rulers and local gunmen from the Druze community left one person dead and nine others injured near Damascus on March 1.
The incident took place in Jaramana, a suburb with a large Druze and Christian population. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that security forces loyal to the new government clashed with local gunmen who were protecting the area. It was unclear whether the fatality was a civilian or a local fighter.
The violence followed a dispute the day before, which resulted in the death of one security personnel and the wounding of another in a checkpoint shooting in Jaramana.
