UK braces for consequences of Trump's economic strategy, foreign decisions
The British government has instructed officials to prepare analytical reports on the potential consequences of Donald Trump's economic policies, particularly concerning foreign affairs and trade.
According to UK media, the analysis focuses on how the Republican administration's actions could affect Ukraine and the Middle East, as well as the ramifications of a possible trade war between the US, China, and the EU on the British economy, per Caliber.Az.
Sources revealed that the UK is concerned that the fallout from Trump’s "America First" policy, particularly regarding tariffs and foreign policy decisions, could have a stronger impact on London than even the consequences of Brexit.
However, another source close to Trump’s inner circle suggested that Washington may offer London a trade deal that would exempt the UK from US tariffs. This potential agreement could be part of ongoing discussions, with the UK hoping to leverage the longstanding "special relationship" between the two countries.
Regarding the US approach to Ukraine, the British Foreign Office is aiming to support the Biden administration in providing Ukraine with maximum financial assistance before Trump assumes office in January 2025.
Additionally, discussions are underway on whether Trump might authorize the use of British Storm Shadow missiles to strike deep into Russian territory.
The British government may need to extend the tenure of British Ambassador to the US Karen Pearce. Originally set to leave in early 2025, her departure may now be delayed until later in the year.
The British media outlet speculates that the next UK ambassador to the US could be former Foreign Secretary David Miliband or Lord Peter Mandelson, the former European Commissioner for Foreign Trade and prominent Labour Party figure.
