At least 17 migrants die after boat drifts for weeks off Majorca

At least 17 migrants have died while attempting to reach the Spanish island of Majorca after spending more than two weeks adrift in a small boat, The Sun reports.

The vessel was discovered in the early hours of August 4, approximately 12 miles (19 kilometres) southwest of Majorca. Two survivors were rescued and taken to Son Espases University Hospital suffering from severe dehydration and malnutrition.

The survivors told authorities they had originally set out with 17 other migrants, all of whom died during the prolonged voyage. They reportedly said they had thrown the bodies overboard while drifting at sea.

Following the rescue, Spanish authorities launched a helicopter search for possible additional survivors and urged fishing and recreational vessels operating in the area to report any sightings.

Just two hours later, a second migrant boat was intercepted about 30 miles (48 kilometres) southwest of Ibiza. The Spanish Civil Guard said the vessel was carrying 15 people of North African origin when it was located at approximately 5:15 a.m. All those on board were rescued, although authorities have not disclosed whether any required medical treatment.

The latest incidents come amid continued pressure on Spain's Mediterranean migration routes. According to local authorities, 211 boats carrying 3,935 undocumented migrants have reached the Balearic Islands so far this year. In 2025, the archipelago received 401 boats carrying 7,321 migrants.

The developments also follow a large-scale influx of migrants into the Spanish enclave of Ceuta in North Africa last week. Spanish authorities said approximately 70,000 migrants crossed into the territory from Morocco, with more than 48,000 subsequently returned across the border by police and military personnel.

Officials estimate that around 5,000 migrants, including nearly 1,000 children, remain in Ceuta as security operations continue. Spanish authorities are also monitoring reports circulating on social media suggesting that additional attempts to enter the enclave could take place in the coming days.
