UK to join Indian investigation into Ahmedabad plane crash
The United Kingdom has announced its formal participation in the investigation of the devastating Air India Boeing 787 crash near Ahmedabad, which claimed the lives of over 290 people.
British authorities confirmed that a team from the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch (AAIB) is being deployed to support the Indian-led inquiry, Caliber.Az reports per UK Government.
In a statement, the AAIB said it has “formally offered its assistance to the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau, India.” The agency also confirmed that it “will have expert status in the Indian safety investigation. This is in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 because UK citizens were on board the aircraft.”
The UK’s contribution will include a multidisciplinary team of specialists, reflecting the complexity and severity of the crash. “We are deploying a multidisciplinary investigation team to India to support the Indian led investigation,” the AAIB added.
While the precise number of British nationals on board has not yet been confirmed, the UK government is urging any concerned citizens to seek assistance. “British nationals who require consular assistance or have concerns about friends or family should call the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO): 020 7008 5000.”
In closing its statement, the AAIB expressed solidarity with the victims and their families: “Our thoughts are with all those affected by this tragic accident.”
The cause of the crash remains under investigation. The Boeing 787, en route from Ahmedabad to London, went down shortly after takeoff, crashing into a nearby medical hostel and resulting in one of the deadliest aviation incidents in recent memory.
