Ukraine aims to convene urgent UNSC meeting due to Kakhovka HPP blast
Ukraine intends to convene an urgent UN Security Council meeting due to the bombing of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power plant by the Russian troops.
"Following a meeting of the NSDC [Ukraine’s National Security and Defence Council] in the morning of June 6, a list of actions of the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry proposed by Foreign Minister Dmitry Kuleba in the context of the response was agreed upon, which, in particular, includes the convening by Ukraine of an urgent meeting of the UN Security Council and the submission of the issue of the Russian terrorist attack to the IAEA Board of Governors, as well as the involvement of the civil protection mechanism of the European Union," Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, RBC-Ukraine reports.
The Foreign Ministry called on the G-7 countries and the EU to urgently consider imposing new forward-looking sanctions on Russia, particularly on the Russian missile and nuclear industries.
“We consider the Russian Federation's detonation of the dam of the KHPP as a terrorist act against Ukrainian critical infrastructure, which aims to cause as many civilian casualties and destruction as possible. The terrorist attack on the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP), was previously intensely discussed at the level of the occupation forces in the Kherson region and propagandists on Russian television, which indicates that it was planned in advance," the statement reads
The ministry stated that due to the lowering of the water level in the Kakhovka reservoir, there might be a risk of an incident at another critical infrastructure facility controlled by the Russians - the Zaporizhzhya NPP.
With this in mind, Ukraine calls on the international community to strongly condemn Russia’s attack at the Kakhovska HPP.
The ministry stresses that Russia must compensate for all the consequences of its crime - for people, infrastructure and the environment.
On the night of June 6, Ukraine reported that the Russian Federation blew up the dam of the Kakhovka Hydroelectric Power Plant (KHPP), located near the town of Nova Kakhovka in the temporarily Russia-controlled territory of the Kherson region.
Dozens of settlements on both sides of the Dnipro River are at risk of flooding.
Units of the National Police and the State Emergency Service of the Kherson region are taking urgent measures to evacuate the civilian population from potential flooding zones. Residents of the Russia-controlled left bank of the Kherson region are being alerted.
