Japan: Tsunami reaches 1.3 metres following Kamchatka earthquake Video
A tsunami with a maximum height of 1.3 metres has been recorded in Japan, according to the country's Meteorological Agency.
The wave was observed at Kuji Port in Iwate Prefecture, located in the northeast of the country, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
Authorities issued a tsunami warning — later upgraded to a tsunami alert — along much of Japan’s eastern Pacific coastline after a powerful earthquake struck off the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia.
While forecasters initially warned that waves could reach up to three metres in some areas, most of the tsunami activity recorded so far has ranged between 30 and 40 centimetres.
The situation continues to be monitored closely by emergency services and meteorological officials.
In Hawaii, tsunami waves are also being felt. Honolulu’s emergency department has issued warnings of destructive tsunamis and urged evacuations in affected zones.
However, Governor Josh Green reported no significant wave impact so far and described it as “a great relief.” While water levels have receded notably in Haleiwa and waves were detected near Midway Atoll, there have been no power outages or major disruptions in the state.
All flights in and out of Maui have been cancelled for the night, with about 200 people sheltering in the terminal.
Authorities remain cautious, noting it will take two to three hours for the full effects to be clear across the Hawaiian Islands.
